5 Questions to Ask Before Starting a Bathroom Remodel

Soaking tubs, tubs with claw feet, shower/tub combos, or no tub at all? That is one of the many questions that homeowners must consider when embarking on a bathroom remodel. Here are some other questions to consider before getting started with your bathroom remodel.

  1. What’s my budget? This is the first question that should be asked. Whether you’re giving the bathroom a facelift or a full renovation, the budget must be considered. If you can’t afford to do everything you want, consider waiting until you can.
  2. What are my wants vs. needs? Every bathroom needs certain things: sink, toilet, lighting, flooring. Depending on the size of the bathroom, it may need more: extra sink, tub, shower, and storage space. Depending on the budget, homeowners might be able to include some of their wants: glass tile backsplash, marble floors, granite countertops, and a soaking tub. Once the budget it determined, you can also determine which of these are affordable options.
  3. Who will use the bathroom and what is its function? Will two adults have to share the space while simultaneously getting ready each morning? Or is it a guest bathroom limited to occasional use? Is it for children? The elderly? Do you want it to be a place where you can escape to soak in the tub after a long day, or is its primary function for showering and getting ready? Consider all of these questions before beginning the bathroom remodel.
  4. How long can we function without this bathroom? This is a great question, especially if the bathroom in question is the main family bathroom. During a bathroom remodel, important fixtures such as showers, sinks, and toilets are often out of commission. Consider how long your family can function (and stay sane) without these. If you feel that it would be too stressful, think about remodeling the bathroom in phases.
  5. How do I find a contractor? There are many ways to find a bathroom remodel contractor. Ask friends and family whom they might suggest. Yelp is also a great way to gauge customer satisfaction. Always make sure contractors are licensed and check with the Better Business Bureau for any discrepancies.
