How to Be Energy Efficient during Your OC Remodel

Remodeling for aesthetic purposes is the top reason why homeowners start the messy construction process, and it is admittedly a great reason to remodel. But more and more often, homeowners are remodeling their Orange County bathrooms and kitchens to make them more energy efficient. Here are a few helpful tips to make your home green.

Install energy-efficient appliances. Roughly 35% of a home’s energy usage comes from appliances, so installing ones that consume less energy is a smart idea. Not only will homeowners save on electric bills, but oftentimes water, electric, and gas companies offer rebates for green appliances. Look for appliances with the Energy Star label.

Go solar. Nearly 18% of a home’s energy consumption is dedicated to heating water. Isn’t that crazy? Installing an Energy Star solar water heating system reduces water-heating costs by 50%. In addition, installing rooftop solar panels not only significantly reduces electric bills but it also reduces greenhouse emissions. In addition to generating all of the energy needed for the home’s uses, solar panels also generate excess electricity that can then be sold back to the local electric company.

Cool it with the cooling. More than 41% of the energy a home uses comes from the air conditioner. Unfortunately, going without A/C is not an option during or after your Orange County bathroom or kitchen remodel. Sometimes it’s even necessary to run it during the winter! If the existing A/C unit is perfectly fine, we recommend having it tuned up along with having the ducts cleaned and inspected. Preventative maintenance is the best way to save energy.

Don’t waste water. For Orange County bath and kitchen remodels, this is perhaps the most important tip, and there are several ways this can be accomplished. If homeowners are in the market for a new washing machine, most available today are water efficient, plus there are rebates available from local water companies. If new appliances aren’t at the top of the list, try some of these:

  • Install aerators on the bathroom and kitchen faucets to reduce the water flow
  • Wash fruits and veggies in a pan of water instead of running water from the tap
  • Wash only full loads of laundry
  • Turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth
  • Take shorter showers
  • Turn off the water while washing your hair
