4 Tips for a Timeless Bathroom Remodel

When preparing for a bathroom remodel, homeowners have plenty of design ideas to consider. Some people might find the prospect of picking their own tile, flooring, and countertops exhilarating and, dare we say it, fun. But for someone who feels that they are creatively challenged, coming up with ideas can be overwhelming. That’s why we came up with four ways to help keep your bathroom remodel timeless.

  1. When in doubt, choose white. White tile, white sinks, white cabinets, white beadboard on the walls—see a pattern? It might sound like a bit much, but nothing opens up a space and reflects light like white does. It’s a timeless look that never goes out of style.
  2. Add some contrast. Dark, stained wood has been in style for years. When it’s paired against crisp white floors, it adds a warmth and richness to the bathroom. Just make sure it’s a walnut or espresso finish, as these provide the darkest, richest look.
  3. Make it look historic. People love historic homes, and for good reason. They’re rich with stories of generations gone by and help people feel connected to something beyond themselves. Adding historic finishes to a bathroom remodel can bring a sense of patriotism and pride to the area. Claw-foot or freestanding bathtubs are a great way to add some history, but if there’s not enough room, finishes such as marble or limestone, which have been used in bathrooms and kitchens for centuries, also make it feel homey. Other historical finishes might include a pedestal sink or subway tile in the shower.
  4. Don’t overlook the storage. This is such an important part of not only a bathroom remodel, but also any renovation anywhere else in the home. Make sure to add built-in storage somewhere in the bathroom, not just under the sink. Older homes have many random nooks and alcoves, which can be mimicked in newer homes with the right planning.

If you like bold pops of color, don’t worry. They can certainly be added with paint, shower curtains, towels, and décor. That way, if the house is ever sold, it’s easy to swap them out for something more neutral.
