Choosing the Best Flooring for Each Room in Your House

When it comes to home remodeling, the design options are limitless. From paint colors, to trim, fixtures and flooring, homeowners may find the decision making process to be daunting (and understandably so!). Each room has a unique function and its features must be chosen with that in mind. When it comes to flooring, there are a myriad of options: carpet, tile, hardwood, laminate, laminate tile, even linoleum is still around (though we don’t recommend it!). When choosing flooring, consider these home-remodeling factors:

  1. The type of room. Are you redecorating a kids’ playroom, an office or a kitchen? The type of room you remodel will determine the type of flooring you choose. Obviously you shouldn’t install carpet in the kitchen or tile in the bedroom. Consider how it will be used and the amount of traffic it will endure. A kids’ playroom should supply flooring that is both plush and somewhat soundproof, while the office can house elegant hardwood floors. If you choose to install hardwood in the living room, keep in mind that you’ll have to invest in a nice area rug to make the space cozy and warm.
  2. Where the room is located within the home. Are you re-flooring the mudroom, entryway, laundry room, or any other room that sits off an entrance to your home? If so, you might consider installing easy-to-maintain ceramic tile. It’s durable and easy to clean. Just sweep up the mess and then mop it down before it gets tracked into another room.
  3. Who is going to use the room most often? If you’re putting new flooring in all the bedrooms, consider your family’s needs. Do you have someone who suffers from environmental allergies? Instead of a high-pile carpet, you might consider Berber or hardwood. If you prefer stepping out of bed onto something nice and warm in the morning, then carpet is your best bet. Are there pets, children, or an elderly parent to consider? These are all important factors to keep in mind when choosing new flooring.
