How to Create an Inviting Living Room Space

The living room is no doubt one of the most used rooms in the house. Ironically, it is usually the last one to be remodeled and yet it is the easiest room in the house to upgrade. Here are some simple tips to help give this busy room an update.

  • Don’t make the TV a focal point. Like its cousin the smartphone, TVs can detract from good conversation. If your home allots the space, move the TV to another room, such as a den or bonus room. If it must go in the living room, consider hiding it behind a sliding door or in a cabinet.
  • Don’t let your furniture float—at least not alone. If the sofa or another large piece of furniture sits in the middle of the room, place a sofa table behind it so that it seems less like an island and more like an anchor. This will give the area more structure.
  • Embrace nature. Adding textures—such as linen, chunky woven fabrics, wood, or natural fiber rugs will give the living room a more inviting feel.
  • Make it comfy. Before you purchase furniture test it out. Are the armrests at a comfortable height? Is the seat too deep for people to be comfortable? Is the couch too hard? Too plush? The last thing you want in your living room remodel is pretty furniture that never gets used.
  • Keep blankets and throws handy. Acting as the easiest and cheapest living room remodel addition, a throw can add a pop of color and provide warmth in the winter. Who knows? Perhaps a guest will even use it over the summer if the AC is turned down too low.
