How to Make Your Small Bathroom Feel Bigger

There are very few things worse in a home than a small bathroom, especially the master bath. That is because the bathroom is home to many important (and necessary!) items: sinks, toilets, showers and bathtubs. Avoiding, removing or rearranging these items is not realistic, so how does one go about making a small bathroom feel large? Read on for bathroom remodeling tips that will make your tiny bathroom feel bigger.

  1. Stick to the same color. Keep the walls, flooring, tile and vanity in the same color family. Opting for light floor and dark walls or vice versa chops the room up visually, making it appear smaller. Instead, opt for light floors, light walls and light cabinetry. It does not have to be the same exact color, but within the same color family.
  2. Tile up to the ceiling. Oftentimes in a builder-grade bathroom, the shower tile stops about a foot before the ceiling. This breaks up the room, which makes the space seem smaller. Tile all the way up to the ceiling for a roomy atmosphere.
  3. Be mindful of transitions. A small space will appear less busy if the materials used appear seamless. For example, run the floor tile all the way into the shower.
  4. Install clear glass shower doors. Textured or “foggy” glass gives the appearance of an extra wall. Clear glass helps to open up the space.
  5. Use big mirrors. And by big, we mean gigantic. Mirrors reflect light and make rooms seem larger. If possible, expand it from countertop to ceiling and trim it out in wood or tile.
