Your Spring Home Maintenance List

Here in Southern California, we’re blessed with year-round great weather – for the most part. Lately, we’ve experienced some rain and below-60-degree weather, which means many of us are ready for sunnier days.

But there’s good news: The first official day of spring is March 20. So, even if it might seem like we’re destined for an eternal winter, you can rest assured that nicer weather is on its way. Is your home ready for the spring equinox? Progressive Builders is here to help you usher in the new season with five home maintenance tips.

  1. Insulate your home.
If you’ve been cranking up the heat all winter long, consider saving energy by weatherstripping your windows. The Department of Energy says that weatherstripping is an easy and effective way to save money on your energy bill. This material will also help keep the cooler air in and hot air out during the spring and summer months.
  2. Start planning your outdoor landscape.
Get your garden growing by sketching out a plan for this year’s plantings. Start some seeds indoors or pick up seedlings at your local nursery. Are you thinking of a new hardscape, such as an updated pathway or fence? Jot those ideas down, too!
  3. Remove winter layers.
Swap out heavy winter bedding for lighter quilts and coverlets. Also, consider switching thick curtains for wispier drapes.
  4. Spring-clean the kitchen.
Give your kitchen a fresh start by cleaning some of the areas we often skip during quick daily tidying sessions: Clean small appliances, wipe grease and grime from the range hood, backsplash and light fixtures, clean grout and vacuum hard-to-reach places (like under the stove).
  5. Clean up patio furniture.
If your outdoor furniture has become grimy from the winter weather, it’s a good idea to give it a good scrubbing. Make sure to launder outdoor cushion covers and replace old pieces as necessary.

By the time those spring flowers start to bloom, you will be able to enjoy them with peace of mind, knowing your home maintenance is up to date.
